Food Storing to Make It Last Longer

Did you know that proper storage can make your fruits and vegetables last longer?

We all understand that eating fruits and vegetables is crucial for a healthy diet. They provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre that our bodies need to function well.

Fruits like mangoes, bananas, and papayas, and vegetables such as spinach, carrots, and cucumbers are staples in many Indonesian diets. These foods are packed with nutrients that support our overall health.

Despite their significance, many people end up discarding large quantities of these nutritious foods because they spoil and have lost their nutritional benefits. The fruits and vegetables can easily spoil due to improper storage.

Why Improper Storage Causes Spoilage

Improper storage accelerates the spoilage of fruits and vegetables. For example,  storing tomatoes in the refrigerator can make them mushy, while leaving leafy greens in a plastic bag can cause them to wilt quickly. Understanding how to store these items correctly can keep them fresh for longer.

The Problem with Improper Storage

Not only improper storage causes food spoils, it also contributes to food waste. In Indonesia, a large portion of waste comes from fruits and vegetables that spoil before they can be consumed, and improper storage is one of the leading causes of this waste. Imagine buying a bunch of bananas or a head of lettuce, only to find them inedible after just a few days. It's not only frustrating but also a waste of money and resources.

How to Store Fruits to Prevent Spoilage

  • Mangoes and Bananas:

These should be kept at room temperature until they ripen. Once ripe, move them to the refrigerator to extend their freshness.

  • Papayas:

Store at room temperature until they soften. Once ripe, refrigerate them to keep them fresh for a few more days.

  • Oranges and Lemons:

These can be kept at room temperature for a week or so. For longer storage, place them in the refrigerator without having to wait for them to ripe.

How to Store Vegetables to Prevent Spoilage

  • Spinach and Lettuce:

Wash and dry thoroughly before storing. Place in a perforated plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.

  • Carrots:

Remove the greens and store in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer. This helps retain moisture and keep them crisp.

  • Cucumbers:

Wrap in a paper towel and place in a plastic bag before storing in the refrigerator. This prevents them from getting too moist and becoming slimy.

By adopting these simple storage techniques, you can significantly extend the life of your fruits and vegetables, providing you with fresh, nutritious foods for a longer time.
