A Decade in the Making: The New LCI Headquarters

Measure. Manage. Communicate.

In 2015, Life Cycle Indonesia (LCI) was founded to help organisations quantify their hidden environmental impacts. To mark our 10th anniversary, we have transitioned from simply advising on sustainability to inhabiting it. Our new Headquarters (HQ) is a physical manifestation of our core values, a "living lab" where every material and design choice is backed by data.

The Architecture of Transparency

We applied the same rigor to our building as we do to the 100+ Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) we have delivered for our clients. By focusing on embodied carbon, we ensured that the building's "skeleton" contributes to a lower-carbon future.

  • Engineered Wood Flooring: By selecting renewable timber, we have sequestered a net total of 44 kgCO2e within the office floor.

  • Recycled Steel Structure: Our central staircase is crafted from 70% recycled steel. While the installation has a footprint of 4,986 kgCO2e, repurposing waste significantly reduced the need for virgin resource extraction.

  • Low-Impact Finishes: Our wall paint was selected for its EPD verification and low-VOC profile. With a total footprint of 1,388 kgCO2e, it ensures carbon transparency extends to the very "skin" of the building.

Sourcing with Integrity

Our material selection honors both the planet and our Indonesian heritage, utilising local resources that meet global sustainability standards.

  • Bengkirai Wood (Shorea laevis): Responsibly sourced under Indonesia’s SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas dan Kelestarian) system, this durable timber acts as a long-term carbon store, sequestering an estimated 7,390 kgCO2e.

  • Ivory Moon Marble Off-cuts: By repurposing stone waste, we avoided the emissions associated with new quarrying. The embodied carbon of these marbles is approximately 1,058 kgCO2e—amounting to just 100g CO2e per day over a 30-year lifespan.

Designing for Performance

The LCI HQ was designed to work with nature to minimise operational energy. Through careful orientation and passive design, we have created a workspace that "breathes" without heavy reliance on mechanical systems.

  • Natural Ventilation: Adjustable Louvre windows allow for continuous airflow. Even during tropical rain, they can be angled to channel breezes, maintaining thermal comfort without electricity.

  • Strategic Lighting: Open interiors and window placement ensure the workspace remains "bright without bulbs" throughout the day, boosting employee well-being while lowering operational carbon.

  • Renewable Energy & Water: Rooftop Solar PV panels power our daily operations, while an integrated rainwater harvesting and greywater treatment system creates a circular water loop for the building.

A Foundation for the Next Decade

As we step into our next chapter, this office serves as a tangible proof point that high-performance sustainability is achievable today. It is a space where we continue to help others measure their impact, while held accountable to our own.

We invite you to visit. Come see first-hand how building sustainability is quantified and implemented in the heart of Indonesia.
