The Directorate of Forest Product Industries and Plantation, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, in collaboration with the Indonesian Pulp and Paper Association (Asosiasi Pulp dan Kertas Indonesia/APKI) and Life Cycle Indonesia (LCI), hosted a dissemination event on December 6, 2024, at Gading Serpong, Tangerang. This event is a step in advancing Indonesia’s decarbonization goals by finalizing the Product Category Rules (PCR) as a guidance to make life cycle assessment (LCA) for the pulp and paper industry.

The audience comprised representatives from government ministries, financial institutions such as Bank Indonesia and the Financial Services Authority (OJK), industry leaders, academia, and international organizations.

The focus of the event was the completion of three key PCR documents: wood pulp or other fiber-based cellulose materials, processed paper and paperboard, and tissue paper. These documents align with global standards, such as ISO 14040/44 for Life Cycle Assessment and General Program Instructions of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) that will provide guidance to improve transparency and accountability in the industry. By adopting these PCR for their LCA reference, the pulp and paper sector aims to strengthen its contribution toward Indonesia’s Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target by 2050.

The Directorate of Forest Product Industries and Plantation opened the event by emphasizing the need for sustainability in industrial practices. Life Cycle Indonesia followed with a presentation on the progress of workshops and technical sessions that informed the development of these PCRs. Their tailored approach ensured the documents address both local industry needs and international standards.

The event also fostered dialogue on policy strategies for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Experts from the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources highlighted initiatives such as improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy.

A key milestone of the event was the dissemination of the PCR documents, representing a major achievement in the pulp and paper industry’s sustainability journey. Discussions throughout the event reinforced the importance of eco-labeling certifications in boosting the global competitiveness of Indonesian products. Stakeholders also stressed the need for strong policy frameworks and investments in green technology to maintain momentum.

The dissemination concluded with a renewed commitment from the Directorate of Forest Product Industries and Plantation, APKI, and LCI to advancing sustainability within the sector.
