Advancing Sustainability: LCI at Life Cycle Management Conference 2025, Palermo

The Life Cycle Management (LCM) Conference is one of the world’s most prominent forums on environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Held biennially, it brings together experts from science, industry, government, and civil society to explore practical ways to integrate life cycle thinking into strategic and operational decision-making.
In 2025, the conference took place in Palermo, Italy, under the theme “Global to Local.” Life Cycle Indonesia (LCI) was honoured to take part as a sponsor, marking another milestone in our journey to make sustainability measurable and actionable through science.
As a sponsor, LCI’s logo was proudly displayed at Teatro Massimo, the historic venue of LCM 2025, the largest lyric theatre building in Italy and one of the largest opera houses in Europe. Seeing our logo on the grand stage among more than 1,000 participants from 51 countries — with over 40% representing industry — was a powerful reminder of how far we have come since our founding in 2015. It symbolised not only our persistence but also our growing role in advancing sustainability in Indonesia and beyond. Through challenges and progress alike, we continue to stand by our purpose: we are here, we contribute, and we bring value to our stakeholders.
Beyond sponsorship, LCI also contributed actively to the scientific dialogue by presenting research papers. Representing LCI were Dr. Jessica Hanafi (Founder & Principal) and David Adiwijaya, (Chief Executive Officer)—both showcasing Indonesia’s growing expertise and leadership in the global life cycle community.
David Adiwijaya presented a collaborative research paper titled “Advancing Sustainable Aviation Fuel: The Process of Including Non-Standard Coconut in ICAO’s Positive List.” The study explores the potential of using non-standard coconuts as feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a solution that can help reduce aviation emissions, minimise food loss, and enhance the economic resilience of local farmers and supply chains. Through the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and collaboration with international stakeholders, the study supports global efforts to decarbonise aviation and transition toward sustainable energy systems.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jessica Hanafi presented “Building Competency for Sustainable Industry: The Development of Indonesia’s National LCA Practitioner Standard.” The paper highlights Indonesia’s pioneering achievement in establishing the world’s first national competency standard for LCA practitioners, officially issued by the Ministry of Manpower in August 2024. The standard defines 12 competency units aligned with international benchmarks such as ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and ISO 14071, ensuring the credibility and consistency of LCA implementation. This milestone not only strengthens national capacity but also positions Indonesia as a frontrunner in advancing global sustainability competency frameworks. Dr Hanafi also served as a member of the Scientific Committee and chaired the session “Dynamic and Prospective LCA Part II.”
LCI’s participation in LCM 2025 demonstrates Indonesia’s growing contribution to global sustainability dialogue. By sharing research, supporting international collaboration, and sponsoring knowledge exchange, LCI reaffirms its commitment to shaping a more circular, data-driven, and scientifically grounded approach to sustainability.
